The Hudson Valley Community College men's soccer team came up just short in their home opener on Sunday afternoon, falling 3-2 to Jamestown Community College in a back-and-forth contest that was decided in the final minute.
The Vikings struck first in the 16th minute when sophomore Anthony Pezzulo buried an unassisted shot into the top left corner to give Hudson Valley the early lead. Jamestown answered quickly, however, as Braidan Govan scored just moments later to level the match at 1-1.
After a tense second half, Govan struck again in the 75th minute to put Jamestown on top. Hudson Valley battled back late, with Joseph Davis converting a backwards header in the 85th minute to tie the score at 2-2.
Just as the match appeared destined for a draw, Jamestown's Shane Bennett scored the game-winner in the 90th minute to hand the Vikings a heartbreaking defeat.
Hudson Valley put together a strong offensive effort, recording 10 total shots, six on goal, and generating six corner kicks. Goalkeeper Juan Rivas kept the Vikings in the match with six saves, but three yellow cards and a last-minute lapse proved costly.
With the loss, the Vikings start the season 0-1 and will look to bounce back in their next matchup against Jefferson at home on August 31st at 3:15pm.
