The No. 7-seeded Hudson Valley Community College volleyball team opened the NJCAA Division III National Championship on Thursday morning, falling in straight sets to No. 10 seed Dallas College-Brookhaven (25-15, 25-18, 25-23).
After dropping the first two sets, the Vikings battled hard in the third, keeping pace with Brookhaven throughout before narrowly falling in a tightly contested final frame.
Hudson Valley was led by Brooke Poutre, who recorded a team-high seven kills to go along with three service aces and 10 total points. Jocelyn Caputo added six kills with a strong .364 hitting percentage, while Madison LaCouture contributed six kills, two block assists, and one ace. Setter Gabriella Kholstinin paced the offense with 23 assists and added five digs on the defensive end.
Defensively, Emily Coffey anchored the back row with a team-high 13 digs, as the Vikings combined for 32 total digs and six team blocks in the match.
With the loss, Hudson Valley moves into the consolation bracket and will return to action on Friday at 10 a.m. CT, facing the No. 15 seed, Monroe-Bronx. The Vikings faced the Express earlier this season at the Dutchess Tournament and swept in 3 straight sets. The winner will advance in pursuit of a top-10 national finish.
