The Hudson Valley Community College women's soccer team enjoyed a dominant weekend, picking up two road wins in convincing fashion. The Vikings defeated SUNY Niagara Club 5-1 on Saturday before shutting out Erie Community College 2-0 on Sunday to bring their record to 2-1-1.
The Vikings opened the weekend with an offensive outburst against Niagara, recording five goals while holding their opponent without a shot. Lauren Dengler got the scoring started in the 20th minute before Gracyn Gates doubled the lead just before halftime off assists from Dengler and Majella Briggs. Kathryn Gross, assisted by Briggs, extended the advantage early in the second half, and Grace Hogan added another in the 71st minute. Anna Nichols capped the win in the 90th minute, heading in a cross from Hogan to secure the 5-1 victory. The Vikings outshot Niagara by a decisive 26-0 margin, controlling possession from start to finish.
On Sunday, the Vikings carried its momentum into Buffalo, blanking Erie in a 2-0 win. Hogan once again sparked the offense, converting a free kick in the 30th minute to put the Vikings on the board. With the match still in reach for Erie, Alessia Salierno put the game out of reach in the 85th minute with an unassisted strike. The Vikings' defense and goalkeeping remained flawless, holding Erie without a single shot while producing 24 of their own on the attacking end.
With the two victories, Hudson Valley improves to 2-1-1 on the season and has showcased both its offensive depth and defensive strength in the early going. The Vikings will look to build on this momentum as they return home for their next matchup against Tompkins Cortland. They open up Homecoming Weekend on Friday at 2pm.
