The Hudson Valley Community College women's soccer team dropped its season opener on Sunday afternoon, falling 6–3 to Jefferson Community College at the Outdoor Athletic Complex.
Jefferson jumped out to a 3–0 lead in the first half with two goals from Samantha Stokely and another from Abby Bombard. The Vikings responded after halftime with a quick surge, as Destiny Collins headed home a corner from Grace Hogan in the 49th minute and Natalie Hastie followed just four minutes later with an unassisted goal to cut the deficit to 3–2.
Jefferson regained control with two more goals midway through the second half before Alessia Salierno scored in the 89th minute to bring the Vikings within 5–3. Stokely, however, netted her fourth goal of the match in the final minute to secure the win for the visitors.
Hudson Valley recorded 11 shots in the match, including nine in the second half, while goalkeeper Olivia Kay finished with seven saves.
The Vikings return to action on Wednesday, 9/3 as they look to bounce back at Herkimer.
