The Hudson Valley Community College softball team delivered an impressive performance on Monday, sweeping Monroe Community College in a home doubleheader, 11-0 and 10-5.
The Vikings used a dominant combination of timely hitting, aggressive baserunning, and strong pitching to secure the two victories and build momentum heading into their next matchup.
In Game 1, Hudson Valley erupted for six runs in the fourth inning to cruise to an 11-0 shutout. The Vikings struck early, plating three runs in the first inning behind RBI efforts from Katie Pryor, Gracelyn Kilburn, and Samantha Graham, who also stole home. They continued to add on in the second and third innings before breaking the game open in the fourth. Pryor highlighted the inning with a two-run double, while Sophia Currao and Alex Castiglione each drove in runs.
Keeley Kristel earned the win in the circle, tossing five shutout innings while allowing just three hits and striking out six. Offensively, Katie Stevens led the way with a perfect 3-for-3 performance at the plate, while Pryor and Kilburn each drove in three runs. The Vikings also showcased their speed, swiping six bases, and played flawless defense without committing an error.
Hudson Valley carried that momentum into Game 2, earning a 10-5 victory to complete the sweep. The Vikings jumped out to an early lead in the first inning with RBI hits from Vinessa Bonafede, Currao, and Bridget Danskin.
After Monroe battled back, Hudson Valley delivered the decisive blow in the seventh inning, scoring six runs. Samantha Graham delivered a bases-clearing double, and Kilburn added a two-run home run to seal the win.
Ella Sawitzki picked up the win, pitching 6.1 innings, while Kristel closed the door to earn the save. Currao and Bonafede each recorded two hits, and Graham drove in a team-high three runs.
With the sweep, the Vikings continue to build momentum as they prepare for their next contest.
Hudson Valley returns to action at home on Tuesday, hosting Herkimer College in a doubleheader scheduled for 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.
