Herkimer Pulls Away from Vikings in Home Contest

The Hudson Valley Community College men's lacrosse team fell to Herkimer College 15–7 on Saturday afternoon at the OAC. With the loss, the Vikings move to 1–2 overall and 0–1 in conference play.
Herkimer jumped out early, scoring three goals in the opening quarter before Hudson Valley answered midway through the frame. Freshman attacker Nathan Stone got the Vikings on the board with 10:24 remaining in the first quarter, finishing a pass from Romeyn Murray to tie the game 1–1. Herkimer responded with three straight goals to close the quarter and take a 4–1 lead.
Hudson Valley made a push in the second quarter behind Stone, who scored twice more to complete a first-half hat trick. His second goal came off a pass from Jake Marsh with 9:26 left in the quarter, and he followed with an unassisted tally less than three minutes later to bring the Vikings within one at 4–3. Herkimer answered again late in the half, scoring three straight to take a 7–3 lead into the break.
The Generals pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring Hudson Valley 6–1 during the period to extend their lead to 13–4 heading into the final frame.
Hudson Valley continued to battle in the fourth quarter as Josh Whitmore scored twice and Ethan Martin added a goal, but Herkimer matched the Vikings down the stretch to secure the 15–7 victory.
Stone led the Vikings offensively with four goals on the day, while Whitmore added two goals and Martin chipped in one. Marsh and Murray each recorded an assist.
Defensively, Travis Yurschak led Hudson Valley with four ground balls and went 7-for-20 at the faceoff X. Goalie Kevin Nicoll made 13 saves in net for the Vikings.
Hudson Valley will look to bounce back on the road when the Vikings travel to face Mohawk Valley on Tuesday, March 17 at 12 p.m.
