Football Stuns Sussex in Overtime Thriller, 37–34
In a wild back-and-forth battle, the Vikings eked out a 37–34 overtime victory over Sussex in dramatic fashion on October 11.
Sussex struck first, as Maurice Williams connected with Stewart Kendal for a 2-yard touchdown, though the PAT failed, giving them a 6–0 lead. Hudson Valley responded quickly, with Bonner powering in a 5-yard rushing score (Jared Navidad PAT good) to put the Vikings ahead 7–6. But Sussex answered immediately: Williams hit Makhy Acey on a 34-yard pass, and the extra point made it 13–7.
Hudson Valley regained control in the second quarter. A 20-yard field goal by Navidad cut the deficit to 13–10, then Bonner broke free for a 70-yard touchdown run (with the extra point) to give the Vikings a 17–13 lead heading into halftime.
The third quarter swung the momentum. Hudson Valley extended their lead when Rodney Bell returned the kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown (Navidad's PAT good), pushing the score to 24–13. But Sussex responded with two Williams-to-receiver connections — 54 yards to Kemond Felder and 37 yards to Acey — to flip the lead to 27–24.
In the fourth quarter, Sussex struck again on a 51-yard Williams to Acey pass (PAT good), taking a 34–24 lead. Hudson Valley mounted a late rally: Nathan Stone found Damien Santiago for a 22-yard score (Navidad good), bringing the game within three. With just five seconds left, Hudson Valley's Jared Navidad drilled a 43-yard field goal to tie the game at 34 and force overtime.
In overtime, the Vikings sealed it, as Navidad nailed a 39-yard field goal to put the Vikings up 37–34. In overtime, Sussex had an opportunity to extend the game, but the Vikings defense came up strong and kept Sussex out of the endzone to deliver the team's fifth win of the season.
