The Hudson Valley Community College football team dropped a hard-fought 22-14 decision to Nassau Community College on Saturday afternoon in front of a spirited homecoming crowd at the HVCC Outdoor Athletic Complex. With the loss, the Vikings move to 2-2 on the season.
Hudson Valley came out firing in the first quarter, as quarterback Micah Gates connected with Nathan Stone on a 16-yard touchdown strike to open the scoring. Running back Chanse Bonner extended the Vikings' lead later in the quarter with an 8-yard rushing touchdown, giving HVCC an early 14-0 advantage. However, momentum shifted late in the second quarter when Nassau's Vincent Spina returned an interception 62 yards for a touchdown, cutting the deficit to 14-6 at the half.
In the second half, Nassau's ground game took control. Caleib Corbett's 1-yard touchdown run in the third quarter pulled the Lions within two, and a 47-yard field goal by Matias Perez He gave Nassau its first lead of the game early in the fourth. Elijah Outlaw sealed the comeback for the visitors with a 1-yard touchdown run and extra point, putting the game out of reach despite a strong defensive stand by the Vikings down the stretch.
Hudson Valley's offense outgained Nassau, finishing with 295 total yards compared to the Lions' 120. Gates completed nine passes for 180 yards and a touchdown, while Bonner led the rushing attack with 52 yards on 17 carries. Despite controlling the stat sheet, turnovers and missed opportunities ultimately proved costly for the Vikings.
Hudson Valley will look to regroup as they continue NJCAA play next week at home vs Erie at 12pm, aiming to get back on track and climb above .500 on the season.
