The Hudson Valley Community College baseball team took a major step forward on Thursday afternoon, defeating #3 Herkimer College, 8-2, in the opening round of the Region 3 Final Four at Falcon Park.
The victory marked the Vikings' first win in an opening game of the Region 3 Final Four since 2010, when Hudson Valley defeated Niagara, 6-2, in a tournament hosted by Herkimer.
Hudson Valley entered Thursday with a 6-12 record in Region 3 Final Four games dating back to 2010 and improved to 7-12 overall with the win.
Sophomore Nico DeSanto led the offensive charge with a dominant performance at the plate, collecting three hits in five at-bats, including a double. He singled in both the first and third innings and drove in two runs for the Vikings.
Hudson Valley wasted little time taking control of the game, plating three runs in the opening inning. Red Maron started the scoring with an RBI single before DeSanto added another run-scoring hit. The Vikings extended their lead in the third inning with RBI singles from Chase Morrison and Logan Norman to build a comfortable advantage. The Vikings finished with 13 hits and showcased aggressive baserunning throughout the game, swiping six stolen bases.
On the mound, Eliezer Rosario earned the win after allowing just one run on five hits over four innings while striking out six. Sean Moore provided five strong innings in relief, allowing only one run while striking out five to close out the victory.
Logan Norman and DeSanto each recorded two RBIs, while Maron added a multi-hit performance. Hudson Valley also showed patience at the plate, drawing nine walks in the contest.
With the win, the #2 seeded Vikings advance to face #1 Niagara on Friday at 12 p.m. at Falcon Park in Auburn with a spot in the Region 3 Championship round on the line.
