The Hudson Valley Community College baseball team wrapped up a high-scoring and action-packed four-game series against Herkimer this weekend, earning a split against the Generals. The Vikings showcased offensive firepower and resilience throughout the series, highlighted by standout performances from Red Maron, Logan Norman, Joshua Ortiz, and Chase Morrison.
Hudson Valley opened the series on Saturday with a tough 17-11 loss in a back-and-forth slugfest. Despite racking up 18 hits, the Vikings were unable to hold off a late surge from Herkimer. Red Maron led the charge with a remarkable 5-for-6 performance, including two doubles. Joshua Ortiz and Logan Norman each drove in four runs, while Nick Commisso and Triston Santos added multi-hit efforts.
The Vikings responded in Game 2 with a 9-6 victory, powered once again by Maron. The sophomore drove in four runs, including a go-ahead three-run double in a decisive six-run fifth inning and a solo home run earlier in the game. Eliezer Rosario earned the win on the mound, striking out 11 over 6.1 innings, while Sean Moore closed the door for the save. Hudson Valley also put pressure on the basepaths, swiping 10 stolen bases in the win.
On Sunday, the Vikings dropped Game 3 by a score of 9-5. Maron continued his dominant weekend with a home run and four RBIs, while Norman set the tone at the top of the lineup with a perfect 4-for-4 performance. Brendan Shea took the loss despite striking out seven over five innings.
Hudson Valley bounced back in the series finale with a commanding 13-3 victory. A nine-run third inning broke the game open, fueled by contributions across the lineup. Chase Morrison led the way with four RBIs, while Norman, Ortiz, and Michael Poltar each contributed key hits. Robert Melo added a two-run home run, making history with his 15th home run of the season, becoming the program's single-season home run leader. Maron continued to make an impact on the bases with four stolen bases. Jeremy Graham earned the win, tossing five solid innings with seven strikeouts.
The Vikings now turn their attention to their next matchup as they travel to face Fulton-Montgomery Community College on Tuesday, May 5. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 PM, with Game 2 to follow at 4:00 PM.
