The Hudson Valley Community College baseball team delivered a dominant doubleheader sweep over SUNY Adirondack on Tuesday, powered by timely hitting, strong pitching, and a historic performance from Robert Melo. The Vikings took Game 1 in convincing fashion, 10-0, before rallying for an 11-6 win in Game 2.
In the opener, Hudson Valley wasted no time getting on the board, striking in the second inning behind a pair of doubles, including a two-run hit from Michael Poltar. The Vikings continued to build their lead, adding a run in the third on a sacrifice fly by Nick Commisso before breaking the game open with a five-run sixth inning. Key hits from Chase Morrison, Logan Norman, and Nico DeSanto highlighted the surge.
Joshua Ortiz led the offensive charge with a perfect 3-for-3 performance at the plate, including a double, while Logan Norman drove in three runs. Chase Morrison added two hits as part of a 12-hit effort for the Vikings.
On the mound, Brendan Shea was dominant, tossing six shutout innings while allowing just five hits and striking out nine. Finn Harkin closed the door in relief with a scoreless inning, striking out three. The Vikings were flawless defensively, not committing a single error.
Game 2 proved to be more dramatic, as Hudson Valley battled back from a 6-2 deficit to secure the sweep. After falling behind early, the Vikings chipped away, tying the game before erupting for five runs in the eighth inning to take control.
Robert Melo delivered the biggest performance of the day, driving in four runs on two hits, including a go-ahead triple in the eighth inning. His standout effort not only fueled the comeback victory but also etched his name in the record books, as he became Hudson Valley's all-time single-season RBI leader with 64, surpassing Rich Guillod's previous mark of 58 set in 2008.
Nico DeSanto stayed hot at the plate, going a perfect 4-for-4, while Nicholas Mirabile and Logan Norman each added multiple hits. The Vikings showcased patience and discipline offensively, drawing seven walks and swiping three bases. Once again, Hudson Valley played clean defense, committing no errors.
Connor Trudeau earned the win in relief, delivering five strong innings while allowing just one run and striking out five. Jeremy Graham got the start, and the bullpen combined to shut things down late to secure the victory.
With the sweep, Hudson Valley continues to build momentum as they head into their next matchup. The Vikings return home on Saturday for a doubleheader against Herkimer, with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
