The Hudson Valley Community College baseball team earned a split on the road Wednesday at Cayuga, using a dominant offensive showing in Game 1 before falling in a tightly contested Game 2.
The Vikings opened the day with a convincing 12-1 victory behind a monster performance from Robert Melo. Melo launched two home runs — a solo shot in the first inning and a three-run blast in the third — finishing with four RBIs to lead Hudson Valley's offensive explosion.
Hudson Valley broke the game open in the third inning, scoring five runs on three hits. Nico DeSanto drove in a run with a single before Melo's three-run homer extended the lead. Red Maron followed with a solo home run to cap the inning.
On the mound, Brendan Shea was outstanding, earning the win after tossing six innings, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out seven without a walk. Gebron Brunson added a scoreless inning in relief. The Vikings totaled 14 hits in the opener, with DeSanto leading the way with a 4-for-5 performance. Nick Commisso and Maron also recorded multiple hits.
In Game 2, Hudson Valley battled but came up just short in a 7-6 loss after Cayuga rallied late.
The Vikings jumped out to an early lead in the first inning, scoring three runs behind contributions from Maron, Nicholas Mirabile, and Chase Morrison. After falling behind following a Cayuga grand slam in the third, Hudson Valley responded in the fifth to take a 6-4 lead on RBI singles from Commisso and Maron.
Cayuga answered in the bottom of the sixth, stringing together key hits to reclaim a 7-6 advantage that held through the final inning.
Despite the loss, Hudson Valley out-hit Cayuga 9-8. Logan Norman led the Vikings with two hits, while Maron drove in a team-high three RBIs. Defensively, Hudson Valley was flawless, committing no errors, with Melo recording a team-high seven chances in the field.
The Vikings return home Thursday for a rematch against Cayuga, with first pitch of the doubleheader scheduled for 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
