The Hudson Valley Community College baseball team opened its spring break trip to Florida with an offensive outburst, sweeping a doubleheader from the Century Woodducks on Saturday to remain unbeaten at 4-0 on the season.
In Game 1, the Vikings erupted for a 21–8 victory, highlighted by a 16-run fifth inning that broke the game open. Chase Morrison singled to start the scoring in the frame, followed by an RBI single from catcher Michael Poltar and an RBI double from outfielder Logan Norman. Red Maron then ripped a two-run double, and Hudson Valley continued to pour it on with bases-loaded walks drawn by Nick Commisso, Triston Santos, Morrison and Joshua Ortiz. Poltar was hit by a pitch to force in another run, Norman added an RBI single, and Robert Melo cleared the bases with a three-run double. Morrison was hit by another pitch to bring in a run, and Ortiz capped the inning with an RBI single as the Vikings sent a steady stream of hitters to the plate.
Hudson Valley had set the tone early, pushing across two runs in the top of the first on a Commisso RBI groundout and a bases-loaded walk to Morrison. The Vikings added three more in the third when Santos grounded into a double play to score a run, Ortiz lined an RBI single to center, and Poltar tripled down the right-field line to drive in another. Century tied the game 5–5 in the fourth, but Hudson Valley's massive fifth inning quickly put the contest out of reach.
Right-hander Connor Trudeau earned the win in relief, working two innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits with one strikeout and no walks. Starter Alexander Deitz gave the Vikings three innings, surrendering four runs on five hits while striking out three and walking three. At the plate, Hudson Valley piled up 17 hits. Nico DeSanto and Melo each recorded three hits, while Morrison and Melo finished with three RBIs apiece. Poltar, Norman and Ortiz each turned in multi-hit efforts. Maron drew three walks as the Vikings showed patience with 10 walks as a team. Commisso and Maron each stole multiple bases, and Hudson Valley finished with seven stolen bases and a double play turned on defense.
In Game 2, Hudson Valley completed the sweep with a 6–2 victory behind a dominant start from right-hander Eliezer Rosario. Rosario tossed five shutout innings, giving up just two hits while striking out six and not issuing a walk. Sean Moore came on in relief to close out the win.
The Vikings broke through in the bottom of the third inning when DeSanto lined an RBI single to get them on the board. Moments later, Melo launched a two-run home run to center field to extend the lead, giving Hudson Valley all the offense it would need. Melo finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBIs out of the three-hole, once again anchoring the middle of the lineup. The Vikings stayed aggressive on the bases with three stolen bases and played clean, error-free baseball defensively. Catcher Frankie Torres was a rock behind the plate, registering eight putouts as Hudson Valley's pitchers attacked the strike zone.
With the doubleheader sweep, the Vikings improve to 4-0 on the season and continue to showcase a balanced profile of high-powered offense, quality pitching and aggressive baserunning.
Hudson Valley is back in action on Tuesday, March 17, when the Vikings face Oakton at 10:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. in Florida.
